Kannon, der Bodhisattva des Mitgefühls, ist die wohl beliebteste buddhistische Gottheit Japans. Dabei stellt er das Ideal eines Bodhisattva dar. Bodhisattva streben die Erleuchtung nicht für sich allein an, vielmehr sehen sie es als ihre Aufgabe, allen Lebewesen auf dem Weg zur Erkenntnis zu helfen. In vielen Tempeln wird Kannon, der die Hilferufe der Wesen in Not hört, als Hauptkultbild verehrt. Anhand von 36 der wichtigsten Werke aus der frühen buddhistischen Kunst Japans (7.-14. Jahrhundert) wird diese Figur und seine verschiedenen Gestalten im vorliegenden Ausstellungsaktalog des Rietberg Museums vorgestellt.
Kannon, the Bodhisattva of compassion, may very well be the most popular buddhist deity of Japan, representing the ideal of a Bodhisattva. Bodhisattvas long for enlightenment, not only for themselves but for all living beings. Kannon, who is able to hear the cries for help of all beings in need, is worshipped as the main idol in many temples throughout Japan. 36 of the most important representations from the early japanese buddhist art (7th to 14th century) are included to introduce the character in his many shapes and forms.
