The italian divisionist movement evolved at the end of the 19th century from the impressionist movement and is considered the first italian avantgarde movement that had an international impact. Colour is not applied flatly, but with a system of points and lines of the primary colours. The different shades are only visible from a further distance.
This publication presents the divisionism as an independent movement for the first time in this extent, also putting it in relation to pointilism and neo-impressionism. Works by Giovanni Segantini, Angelo Morbelli or Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo are put in relation to works by Georges Seurat, Paul Signac or Camille Pissarro, making commonalites and differences visible.
Der italienische Divisionismus entwickelte sich Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts aus dem Impressionismus und gilt als erste international einflussreiche Avantgardeströmung des Landes. Die Farbe wird hier nicht als Fläche, sondern als System von Punkten und Strichen aus den Grundfarben auf die Leinwand aufgetragen, sodass sich erst aus größerer Entfernung die verschiedenen Tonabstufungen ergeben.
Die Publikation stellt den italienischen Divisionismus als eigenständige Stilrichtung erstmals umfassend vor und beleuchtet dabei auch dessen Verhältnis zum Neoimpressionismus beziehungsweise Pointillismus. Werke von Giovanni Segantini, Angelo Morbelli oder Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo treten mit Arbeiten von Georges Seurat, Paul Signac oder Camille Pissarro in einen spannungsreichen Dialog, der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede anschaulich werden lässt.
