„Tjukurrpa“ ist eine Bezeichnung in der Sprache des zentral-australischen Stammes der Warlpiri, das sowohl die Schöpfung als auch die sozialen Regeln des Zusammenlebens beschreibt. Der Begriff verbindet Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft, die zeitlichen Unterscheidungen der westlichen Welt existieren nicht.
Der Band präsentiert zeitgenössische Kunst aus Zentral-Australien.
anhand eines exemplarischen Werkes werden hier 34 Vertreter der sogenannten „Übergangskunst“, die im Gegensatz zur traditionellen Volkskunst mit europäischen Materialien hergestellt werden, vorgestellt.
Jede Arbeit ist sowohl in einer farbigen, großformatigen Abbildung, als auch in Details wiedergegeben. Die Bilder werden anhand der Biografie des Künstlers und anhand kulturhistorischer Betrachtungen erklärt. Durch kenntnisreiche Texte über die Völker der westlichen Wüste, deren Beziehung zur modernen Welt, sowie deren Ikonografie, werden die Künstler in einen kulturellen Kontext eingeordnet.
“Tjukurrpa“ is an apellation in the language of the central-australian tribe of the Warlpiri and describes both the creation as well as the social rules of living together. The term connects past, present and future, it avoids the differentiation of the western cultures.
This volume introduces 35 contemporary artists from Central-Australia, representatives of the so-called “transitional“ art, that is produced with european materials, in opposite to the traditional folk art. Each artist is presented on the basis of one work.
Each of the paintings is reproduced not only in large scale, coloured reproductions, but also in details. The works are interpreted with help of the artist's biography and cultural historical accounts. The insightful texts further explain the tribes of the western desert and their relationship to the modern world, as well as the iconography.
