Karel Appel (1921-2006) war Mitbegründer der Gruppe COBRA, die dem Abstrakten Expressionismus und dem Informel nahestand. Zugleich galt er als das Multitalent der Bewegung. Er war nicht nur als Designer aktiv, sondern betätigte sich auch als Musiker und schrieb Gedichte.
In seinen Arbeiten versuchte Appel immer wieder, seine Malerei – grell-farbige, pastos aufgetragene Ölbilder in wildem, grob-primitivem Stil – mit anderen Künsten zu verbinden. Legendär sind seine Kooperationen mit Chet Baker oder mit Allen Ginsberg. Der Titel des Kataloges zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung „Variazioni sul tema“ verweist indirekt auf die Nähe zum Jazz. So lässt sich seine Malerei am ehesten mit dem Free Jazz eines John Coltrane oder Albert Ayler vergleichen. Zugleich wird deutlich, wo Appel in den Neunzigern - aus dieser Zeit stammen die vorgestellten Werke - stand. Nach der energiegeladenen Rohheit der 70er und der darauf folgenden düsteren figurativen Darstellungsweise der 80er entsteht hier eine Synthese beider Stile.
Ergänzt wird der schöne Katalog durch ein Interview mit Karel Appel von Rudi Fuchs, in dem Appel lakonisch, aber präzise, seine Ansätze darlegt und auch auf musikalische Einflüsse seiner Malerei eingeht.
Karel Appel (1921 - 2006) was one of the founders of the artists group COBRA that oriented itself close to the abstracz expressionism and the Informel movement. At the time he was considered as the muti- talent of the group. He was active as designer, as well as musician and writer of poems.
Again and again Appel tried to connect his paintings- screaming oil pictures in a wild, primitive style- with other arts. His cooperative works with Chet Baker and Allen Ginsberg are legendary. The title of the catalogue "Variazoni sul tema" refers indirectly to the proximity to Jazz music. His paintings can be compared with the Free Jazz of John Coltrane or Albert Ayler. His position in the Nineties, the time where these works were manufactured, becomes clear. After the energetic, raw works of the 70's and the dark figurative representation of the 80's he developed a synthesis of both styles.
The beautiful catalogue is supplemented by an interview by Rudi Fuchs in which Appel demonstrates his approach on painting, as well as his musical influences in a laconic, nevertheless precise way.
